Atrial septal defect (ASD) is a congenital heart defect in which blood flows between the atria (upper chambers) of the heart. Some flow is a normal condition both pre-birth and immediately post-birth via the foramen ovale; however, when this does not naturally close after birth it is referred to as a patent (open) foramen ovale (PFO).

Patients with an isolated ASD often remain asymptomatic early in life. If untreated, it results in exercise intolerance, An ASD is characterized by a defect in the interatrial septum that allows pulmonary venous return to pass from the left to the right atrium (i.e., left-to-right shunt), resulting in right atrial and right ventricular chamber dilation. There are four types of ASD. The first type is an ostium secundum defect. The most common type of ASD, the ostium secundum defect, is caused by a shortened valve of the foramen ovale (foraminal flap) resulting from excessive resorption of the septum primum or to deficient growth of the septum secundum (Fig. 4–3). Figure 4–3 Ostium secundum ASD. A, … Four Major Types of ASD. Most common is ostium secundum (60%) located at fossa ovalis; High association with prolapse of the mitral valve.

2017-05-01 An atrial septal defect (ASD) is an opening in the interatrial septum, causing a left-to-right shunt and volume overload of the right atrium and right ventricle. Children are rarely symptomatic, but long-term complications after age 20 years include pulmonary hypertension, heart failure, and atrial arrhythmias. 2019-03-06 Secundum atrial septal defect (ASD), located in the central part of the atrial septum within the floor of the fossa ovalis, is the most common type of ASD. A sinus venosus ASD is a type of atrial septum defect in which the defect involves the venous inflow of either the superior vena cava or the inferior vena cava. [citation needed] A sinus venosus ASD that involves the superior vena cava makes up 2 to 3% of all interatrial communication. ASD: atrial septal defect. Upon further review of the anatomic images and the magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) of the chest, we identified an anomalous left superior pulmonary vein emptying into the left innominate vein ( Figure 4 , white arrows). 2014-01-11 2021-04-06 Secundum atrial septal defect (ASD), located in the central part of the atrial septum within the floor of the fossa ovalis, is the most common type of ASD.
