Peter Liljedahl developed the Thinking Classroom concept, which originated from extensive research on which teaching methods have the greatest impact on student learning in math classes. Notably, the research focused on teacher and student perception. Some of the takeaways from Liljedahl’s work are easy to implement.: Stand up. As it turns out, there’s a lot to be said for thinking on your feet.

Building Thinking Classrooms In this workshop, Dr. Peter Liljedahl looks at a series of such practices, emerging from Classroom Teachers, Lead Teachers.

I have seen many teachers including Dr. Liljedahl present this idea at many professional development opportunities. Today, we continue this discussion by talking with researcher and author Peter Liljedahl about his new book - Building Thinking Classrooms (2020) - which focuses on unpacking practices that promote growth, community, engagement, and positive mathematical identities in order to promote student centered classrooms. Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics, Grades K–12 helps teachers implement 14 optimal practices for thinking that create an ideal setting for deep mathematics learning to occur. This guide Provides the what, why, and how of each practice and answers teachers’ most frequently asked questions Mimicking, faking, stalling, slacking, I have seen all kinds of behaviours like these in my math class.

Thinking classrooms are something for which many teachers strive. After all, wouldn’t it be great for students to tackle a problem eagerly, explore variables, and collaboratively come up with a solution?
