The nyckelharpa is a more than a thousand year old instrument that has gone through many changes. My nyckelharpa is a further development of the so-called three-line "chromatic" nyckelharpa, which I consider to be the most interesting model for both solo play, for drone and polyphonic music.

A Nyckelharpa is a chromatic instrument played with a short bow across strings stopped by means of keys. It is likely the predecessor of the Autoharp. Murals, stone carvings and documents show that a form of the instrument has been around since the Middle Ages and was used for church music, festivals, and dancing. The Nyckelharpa (or "Keyed Fiddle") is the national folk instrument of Sweden. I made my first Nyckelharpa in 1999 thanks to a grant from the Prairie Lakes Regional Arts Council. The design is based on the blueprints from the book I bought from Soren Ahker. Nyckelharpa. Första beviset på instrumentets existens, är en liten stenfigur vid entrén till Källunge Kyrka, på Gotland. Det är en liten ängel, huggen i sten, som spelar nyckelharpa. Den skulpturen kom till ca år 1350. Under många hundra år har det funnits tradition av detta instrument i Upplandsregionen.

Äntligen en riktig fin nyckelharpa! Ett genomtänkt instrument med balanserat ljud. Fungerar klanderfritt. Kort och gott ett mycket gediget och exakt bygge. Konstruktionen är sprungen ur flera decenniers intensivt spelande och utforskande av instrumentet och dess möjligheter.

På söndagen korades två världsmästare i nyckelharpa på Skansen i Stockholm. Nyckelharpan är ett instrument med ursprung i Sverige, närmare bestämt runt Redan 1490 avbildades en person spelandes på en nyckelharpa men det  Mats är en skicklig nyckelharpsspelare som började med instrumentet vid tretton års ålder. Idag är han riksspelman med nyckelharpa. Tillsammans med Håkan  Nyckelharpans hemligheter. Det många inte känner till är att den fascinerande nyckelharpan faktiskt är vårt lands inofficiella nationalinstrument.
